NSW 4WD Training Camp :
To safely travel around this extensive country savoring it's magical landscape requires some degree of knowledge and experience. Although Australian 4WD can teach you how to use your vehicle off road safely in one day; the knowledge of recovery equipment; essential items to equip your vehicle safely and to drive defensively off road in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others, unfortunately can not be packaged into a single day.
To cover the many subjects that we know to be essential for the traveller to be able to enjoy their trip, we have devised the 'Camp' idea and expanded upon some of our training, mixing theory and practical.
The intention is to give you as wide a knowledge base as possible. Beware! To drive a 4WD or off road capable vehicle efficiently requires skill and in order to develop such skill there are techniques that need to be practiced. The use of incorrect techniques develops poor skill and improper practice. Poor driving habits in a four-wheel drive vehicle can unknowingly increase your maintenance costs considerably, in some cases the repercussions can be expensive and at most life threatening.
The Course takes you through:
How your 4WD works; Vehicle Maintenance; Driving position, blind spots, turning circle; Wheelprinting; Stall recovery techniques; Side slopes; Steep ascents & descents; and Recovery & 4WD equipment.

An essential component of training must the safe and correct means of handling a vehicle recovery.
This Course includes:
Safe and effective use of a snatch strap;
Operating a hi-lift jack;
Operating an exhaust Jack;
Operating a front mounted winch;
Operating a hand winch;
Introduction to MaxTrax;
You will be taught how to retrieve your vehicle with the barest of makeshift essentials and you’ll learn the weights, ratings and capabilities of the equipment you now own.
One of the most dangerous surfaces to travel over with a vehicle is gravel. Even at the best of times driving skills can be tested as gravel roads are often not engineered and/or rarely maintained. Corners, shoulders and dips can often lead to loss of control of your vehicle.
Motorists who drive a 4WD vehicle are operating a vehicle that is anywhere between 500-1500kg heavier, wider and a higher centre of gravity, than a two-wheel drive vehicle. The ‘hands on’ section of our High Range Course takes you through inspecting your vehicle before travelling off the bitumen along with the correct driving position, to help you through the ‘practical’. Through manoeuvring, cornering, braking and accident avoidance exercises, you will develop a good understanding as to how your vehicle handles in potentially dangerous situations. The obstacles are designed to simulate real life situations commonly faced on gravel roads. By combining this experience with the theory of how your 4WD works, you will be in the best position to avoid having an accident on a gravel road. Whether you drive 4WD vehicles as part of your employment, are planning that ‘round Australia’ journey or maybe just doing a few short expeditions, you need to equip yourself with the right skills and experience. This session takes you through 4WD specifics, such as: mechanical maintenance for outback travel; emergency braking technique; cornering technique; Systems of vehicle control;
This session is designed to discuss the area of Trip Preparation and Survival Techniques. It will also provide you with the knowledge and confidence to go on that long awaited journey. It will give your passengers the confidence in your ability so they too can enjoy the trip and will go with you again and again.
This session offers open discussions in relation to trip preparation and the various problems and issues facing 4WD enthusiasts when planning an expedition into remote areas. It will include where to go, what to take, how to load it. Communication needs will be addressed as they may at some stage prove to be a ‘lifeline’! You will learn how to skillfully handle most situations that arise on excursions. Taking a responsible approach to owning and/or operating a 4WD, whether it be for or your own recreational adventures exploring the outback of Australia, traversing the Simpson Desert or just taking the occasional one day outing, is essential
