Historical Outback Queensland

This is one of our most popular tours, visiting some of the remote 4WD destinations and places steeped in history. Join us on this memorable trek exploring Historic Outback Queensland. We will learn the history of each township and experience the atmosphere of these remote Outback Queensland towns.

This Tour ventures through some diverse areas of our vast continent, visiting regions isolated by distance, travelling over rich alluvial plains and sandy ranges, and through spectacular remote areas and surreal landscapes. We will start our journey at Charleville with its architectural buildings dating back as far as 1888.

We will stay at a town that was established in 1882. In fact, the town's only occupied building is the Hotel, which provides a wealth of historic information.  Our knowledge will be broaden by passing through an area famous for its role in the Burke and Wills expedition. The town’s Hotel was a stopover for shearers, who rode their push bikes to woolsheds up and down the Strzelecki Track.

We travel to areas such as Birdsville and Windorah, with a panorama of giant red sandhills.  In between these well known towns we will pay our respect to a 1880 Hotel that no longer stands, due to the manager of a near by station, who bought the Hotel, ripping the roof off. The weather did the rest, and today there is little left but mounds of clay, a few rotting timbers, scatter ed bottles and a grave yard.

We will sing Waltz Matilda at the town that had three bustling country Hotels boosted by a staging post of Cobb & Co. The town is now home to just one, the famous 1889 Blue Heeler Hotel. It has an association with the first days of the song ‘Waltzing Matilda’, with Banjo Paterson having drunk at the Hotel. We will stay at a Hotel without a town ~ but with parking meters. The Hotel sits on 10 000 acres and has a tennis court, cricket pitch, golf course and community hall.

Enjoy our visit to the heart of dinosaur country, one of the worlds richest repositories of fossilised dinosaur bones. The history of this town is really that of Harry Redford. a story of audacity, cunning, chicanery and consummate bushmanship. Learn what crime Harry had committed and how he was found ‘Not Guilty’.

The Queen Hotel was once owned and operated by the Opal Queen of the Outback, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This town is the home of the famous Mud Springs, date farm, world lizard races, and where keepers come to allow their bees to feed on Eucalyptus found in the region.

Our next town has two sites of interest ~ Wellshot Hotel, a history of different locations and some quirky traditions, and the Machinery  Museum, which has many interesting and intriguing machines, trucks, wagons and earth moving equipment in its collection.

During our journey we will experience and explore some of the most remote and historical Towns that the Outback of Queensland has to offer. We will have our evening meal each day at one of the historic towns. Whilst there, we will learn about its history and have a yarn with the locals. Each Town has ’its own story to tell’ – why not join us!
